A
quilt full of “Thank Yous” to Wilma Black for sharing her quilting journey with
the guild last month. We enjoyed the
stories that she connected with each of her quilts. It was particularly interesting hearing about
her quilting diary of what she works on from day to day. So inspiring, I was sew inspired that I
started my own diary the very next day.
Wilma has accomplished so much in such a short time for a new quilter.
Tommy
Leitner will be available to service your machine during the December
meeting. The more machines we have, the
lower the cost for each machine serviced.
Currently, I have received one response.
I need to hear from more members.
Don’t forget your sewing friends too; they are invited to
participate. If we have more machines
than Tommy can work on that evening, Ann Maletic has graciously volunteered her
Forest Lake home as a drop-off location.
If your machine doesn’t need cleaning, you are not sewing enough!
The
Second Devine Sew Free Sew Day was a blast.
Sixteen ladies and one gentleman attended. (And he quilts!) Donna Royson taught her Tumbling Blocks class
while two members did some hand sewing and others stitched along with their
machines. Shirley Johnson, the new owner
of Pieces & Patches, joined us along with some ladies who are in the
infancy of their quilting life. Welcome
Frances and Gail!. We all hope to see
these ladies again at guild or the next Sew Day. Pitty Pat and Frances brought much humor to
our table during lunch; sharing their life stories with us. I know everyone will agree the end of the day
came way too soon and we will certainly do this again.

Block of the Month
In honor of Shark Week, the Double Sawtooth block! The Theme is “Ocean”.
See http://www.quilterscache.com/D/DoubleSawtoothBlock.html for construction info. Perhaps an ocean or water themed fabric for
the center square?
In August we had 4 blocks turned in and $3 - won by Joyce
Browder.

Lone Star
Wow, after all this time we are finally bringing our Lone Star Quilts to
the Devine meeting so that they will be exhibited at the Richland Library. It's
not too late if you want to sew up a quick one. We have a lineup of 30
wonderful quilts both old and new, and using a variety of techniques. This is
going to be a fascinating show, thank you quilters.
We will have an area set up to receive the quilts. Debbie Hotchkiss is
taking care of all the information need on your quilt (you are encouraged
to get this finished ahead of time). Joyce Greer will help you install the
hooks so that your quilt will hang properly. Mary Cross will check you off the
list when you have completed these tasks and filled out the permission to hang,
etc. and Anita Bowen will load up your quilts for transportation. Please call
or e-mail me if you have any questions or concerns. ---Helen
October’s Fundraiser: Sale and Auction
Please bring your donation items
for sale or auction to the September meeting, so that we have time to price
them. Think patterns, books, precut
fabric collections, rulers, tools, etc., etc.
If you have yardage, please pin a note with how many yards. Have fun bundling up coordinated fabrics, fat
quarters, etc.
If you can’t bring items to a
meeting, contact one of the Auction Committee members below to make separate
arrangements. Baked goods and other last
minute items also be delivered early on the night of the meeting (details
later).
Let’s raise
lots of money for future program expenses!

Helen Brown has generously donated
a week at a condo at Myrtle Beach, timed to coincide with the annual Myrtle
Beach Quilt Party.
Details:
Where: Carolina
Grande 2505 N. Ocean Blvd., Myrtle Beach, SC 29577
When: Monday to Monday, Jan 20 to
27. Check in 4pm, checkout 10am
Three bedroom condo (two king
rooms, one room with 2 double beds, and a pull out sofa).
Two baths. Balcony, kitchen, laundry. Microwave,
iron and ironing board. Hot tub on roof; parking garage with 1 designated
space, and overflow parking.
For more info: http://www.bluegreenvacations.com/resorts/sc/carolina-grande
There will be a minimum bid requirement, to be announced
later.
Pass this on to friends at other guilds—a lot of Columbia
quilters go to the Myrtle Beach Quilt Party each year.
Another auction item will be a
fixture from the old Quilted Pearl: a
wheeled, triangular display rack. The triangular base is 26” on a side. Each gridded panel is 21” wide by 72” tall,
and the 3 sides fold flat or separate for transport. They can also be laid against or mounted flat
on a wall. The grid square openings are
about 1.5” square. Included are 44 grid
hooks and a few other hanging devices.
This is a terrific way to hang your rulers, cords, tools, etc. It could also be a great organizer for a
spouse with lots of tools. A picture of
it will be at the Sept. meeting and at the auction. If you are the top bidder, Beth Karr will
deliver it to your house (within a 40 mile radius of DQ’s meeting location).
Minutes for the August 5, 2013 Meeting
v
Joyce Greer conducted the pre-meeting
demonstration on hanging sleeves that meet quilt show standards. She showed
members how to fold the fabric to be used for the sleeve, gave us the dimensions
of the raw and finished sleeve's width, and explained how to calculate the
length of the sleeve to accommodate the intended quilt. She later made available a YouTube demo by an
AQS instructor who covered the same ground so that interested members could
review the instructions at their own pace and convenience.
v
Stephanie Alexander called the meeting to order
since Sue Spillane was out of town and unable to attend the meeting. Three guests introduced themselves. Then Stephanie introduced Wilma Black, who
gave a trunk show of the quilts she has made over the years. Wilma is an accomplished needlewoman in
crafts that include knitting, cross stitch, and beading. Her quilts spanned the traditional to the
contemporary, and some were embellished with beads. Wilma happily answered questions from the
group at the conclusion of her presentation and left us with the following
quote: "There are many fine things
which you mean to do someday, under what you think will be more favorable
circumstances. But the only time that is
yours is the present." (Grenville
Kleiser, American author, 1868-1935)
v
After Wilma's presentation concluded, there was
an intermission so that the members could look over her quilts and talk to her
about her quilting journey.
v
When the meeting reconvened, the members approved
the minutes from the July meeting.
Stephanie reminded everyone about Sew Free Day on Saturday, August
24. Members who are attending should bring
a non-perishable food donation as well as a pot luck item for lunch.
v
Susan Lenz will be September's speaker. The September meeting will take place on the second Monday instead of the
first, due to the Labor Day holiday.
v
Jodi spoke about the BOM challenge: a 15"
double saw tooth block that uses sharks, fish, or the ocean as a theme. Jodi said the colors should be
"ocean-y." Joyce Browder was
the winner of August's blocks.
v
Auction items were displayed so that members
could get an idea of the things they might submit for sale. Items are due by the September meeting,
although some may be accepted just before the auction if they arrive early
enough to be priced. Some items will
have a floor-price and bids below this level will not be accepted. Baked goods for sale may be brought to the
auction the day of. Jane Gold will be
the auctioneer. Members are asked to
invite their quilting friends to this meeting to maximize the funds we hope to
raise for our programs.
v
Lone star quilts are due at the September
meeting. The organizers would prefer
labeled quilts smaller than king size.
The hanging sleeve must accommodate a dowel rod that extends beyond the
sleeve. The quilt maker must provide the
dowel rod, but the organizers will provide all other hanging materials. The hanging sleeve may be split into two or
three units in the case of larger quilts.
Quilts are expected to hang in the library for six weeks or so.
v
Sewing machines will be serviced at the December
meeting. More information about this
event and a sign-up sheet will be provided at upcoming meetings.
v
The birth stone challenge quilts are due at the
November meeting.
v
Show and Tell concluded the meeting.
