August's meeting is the charity workshop for this year. We are making Tumbling Blocks quilts. Lynn Lucas and Stephanie Alexander will have their Accu-cut machines and will cut the fabric you all bring. Some 'kits' have been put together and are ready to be sewn. The early birds can get started as soon as they arrive. Unfortunately the Love Goddess will not be able to attend, but she does have cherubs who are fabulous helpers and will guide you through the process. So please help them help me.
What to bring:

June 2010 Newsletter
From the President:
Dear Quilters, Hope everyone is doing well and finding time to quilt in the middle of all of our summer activities. I personally have been very busy the last week trying to get ahead of schedule as one of my college friends is coming in just under two weeks to stay for a week while Todd is out of town. We always have the best time together and I am looking forward to a week of fun filled with zany, crazy, antics. I followed her instructions and planted plenty of mint this year so she can make mint juleps. I had never had one until last summer. They are her specialty! Our guild is so lucky to be able to have the Heart Quilt exhibit next month. Please bring your friends along to enjoy an evening of fun to see this wonderful exhibit, have ice cream and enjoy good friends. I picked my first tomatoes from the vine yesterday morning. They are big and fat and juicy! We have been getting cherry tomatoes for awhile now. Hopefully the wait for eggplant, squash, celery, cucumbers, beans, peppers, and cabbage won't be much longer. There are two banana peppers that are almost ready. Things always taste best fresh from the garden don't they? We split our garden this year between front and back yard and it is so fun to see the difference between front and back. Of course you can't forget the herbs either. It is wonderful to go outside with a pair of scissors just before cooking dinner. So until next time keep quilting away. See you all in July if not before!!!!! ---Lynn

Minutes for June 7, 2010 Meeting
Meeting called to order by Lynn Lucas.
There were no human guests to introduce, however, Jodi Spillane introduced her 2 hedgehogs.
Minutes from the May 3, 2010 meeting approved.
Old Business: Opportunity quilt. Lynn Lucas opened a discussion of the opportunity quilt. At a Devine Board meeting earlier in the evening, the Board concluded that, because raffles are not legal in South Carolina, we could not raffle the opportunity quilt. Based on Lynn’s phone conversation with Ned Badgett, Assistant Director of Public Charities, our guild could lose our non-profit status. A motion was made and approved by the guild that a live auction be held at the September general meeting to sell the unfinished quilt, “as is”, to the highest bidder. The bids would start at $100.00 plus the cost of the materials. {see further details in article below}.
The July and Sept. meetings will be held on the 2nd Mondays due to holidays.
June birthdays are Joyce Greer, Mary Cross, Libby Law, and Elly Hansen.
Mary Cross, Love Goddess, announced that August meeting will be dedicated to making charity quilts. Bring sewing machines and irons. We will make the megaphone design using the Accuquilter cutter. Bring 8” X 8” inch squares if you can. A few people will start cutting the megaphones at the Design group this Thursday at Quilted Pearl.
Libby Law, Treasurer, announced our bank balance at $3,350.00.
Helen Brown announced that the program for next month includes the Heart Quilts, an extension of the Prom Party, and an ice cream social.
Teresa Coolidge gave a demonstration of a batik quilt made from 10’ squares. Deborah Hotchkiss gave a demonstration of using the computer and websites to obtain ideas. Elizabeth Kelbaugh gave a demonstration of using EQ on the computer to design quilts.

From the President:
Here is hoping all are doing well and quilting away!
When I was a child one of my favorite meals was my mother's salmon croquets and cole slaw. No one else's has ever tasted as good as hers did. When I grew up and set up my grown up house, one cold winter’s night I made salmon croquets and cole slaw, they did not taste the same. Mom swears I make them the same but over the years I just gave up on the salmon croquets and adopted a new way of making slaw. Did mom's taste better because they were seasoned with love?
What does this have to do with quilting you ask? Well, I will tell you. Recently I was under the weather and just wanted to cuddle up and nap. I have a quilt that my husband’s grandmother gave us shortly after we were married, and it is without a doubt my favorite quilt. I so wanted to nap under it but it is very much like the Velvetine Bunny: old, frayed and worn. Since I was ill I did not want to make it germy and in need of being washed, so I cuddled up under one on my own quilts (one I have made). Much to my dismay it did not feel the same. It occurred to me that the difference was love. One of the reasons I love being a longarmer is that it is a very heartwarming experience. When I am quilting a quilt that someone else has made, very often I can feel the love that went into each and every stitch especially if it is a gift for one of their family or friends, the love just comes pouring forth. My quilts are most often made for others with love going into each and every stitch. The ones that I have made for me just don't have the same feel, much like those salmon croquets and cole slaw. The favorite quilt of which I am speaking is the only quilt that was ever given to me and it was given jointly to my husband and I. My family was not a family of quilters - they were sewers but not quilters - and I was so fortunate that my grandmother in-law was a quilter. I wonder how many of you have had the same experience with your own cooking or quilts.
Thus salmon croquets, cole slaw and quilts are the same in my book. I want my mother's salmon croquets and cole slaw and I want a quilt made from the heart and full of love just for me. I know we are grownups and wants are just that, but how many of you feel the same? My poor husband, I had him proof read this last night, this morning at breakfast he said he had been thinking about it and if he could sew he would make me one, because he knows that feeling of which I was speaking, seems he feels it each and every time he naps under one of the quilts made for him. After sleeping on it myself it occurs to me why charity quilts are so valuable in the healing process. To know that someone you know has made you a most wonderful quilt is a heart warming experience. To know that a stranger was thinking of you and showed such a random act of kindness and love must be overwhelming. Lets keep quilting! --- Lynn

March 2010 Newsletter
From the President:
Wow, what a month this has been! The heat went out in my studio. It needed a new flux capacitor or something like that. The part was over a week coming in. I realize that I have become quite spoiled and space heaters are not the way I want to go on a permanent basis. Last month when we moved the hot water heater I found an old directors chair that was tucked away behind it. My mom bought it second hand when I was in high school. Now I have resurrected it and am most happy to finally be able to use that fabric that I purchased over a year ago at Mary Jo's, that had spools of thread and bolts of fabric on it, by making seat covers. I thought I was going to have to call someone for a seat cover intervention as I have made nothing other than quilts for so long. I now have a wonderful chair in my studio where I can sit and ponder the meaning of life. My husband keeps saying it is “42”, at least that is the answer given in Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy.
I hope everyone has been very busy quilting away. I have been at it every chance that comes this way. I had a fabulous time working on charity quilts earlier this month, when we all met at The Quilted Pearl. I am looking forward to the next day of fun, friends and good food. I have a quilt of mine on my long arm now. Actually it is Todd's quilt. He picked out these wonderful templates for me then I had to buy fabric to go with them. Anyway Priscilla and I will be working on it tomorrow, the Good Lord willing and the creek don't rise. Did everyone get a chance to play in the snow? A wonderful time was had by all-- the dogs chased snowballs in the backyards and there are still a few snowmen lingering a sad good bye. Have ya'll been watching the Olympics. It stuck me as odd that Canada had to truck in snow and we had plenty. My mom said she saw on the news that this is the first time in recorded history that all 50 states to include the highest elevations in Hawaii have had snow at the same time. Interesting bit of trivia. I am looking forward to the next meeting. Our last meeting was so wonderful and I understand that the workshop was wonderful. It sounds as if everyone had a great time. --Lynn Lucas

March in the year of Crazy Quilts
I hope we have all started on a Crazy Quilt. If not, between 6 and 7pm we can learn a traditional method for starting squares-- on newspaper, paper pieced or muslin squares.
For our program: first, Joyce Greer has agreed to give us hints for neat storage of our material. Next, Lynn Buske is going to show us some techniques for using Shiva oil paintsticks. Remember the lovely quilt that she showed us last fall? She will illustrate how to make the panels. Finishing up our program will be Sara Quattlebaum. She is going to show us part of her collection of Dover books and show us how they inspire her quilts from designs to quilting motifs.
The April meeting will be on March 29th (a week early) because we are having Laura Wasilowski from the state meeting as a speaker. –Helen
Minutes for February 1, 2010
Lynn Lucas called the meeting to order at 7:00pm.
Visitors, Gayle Mundstosk, Leslie Mullins, Robbie Kupper, Elly Hansen, Kathy Houser, and Sally Somerall, were all introduced.

Spring QSC meeting will be in March.
The Gees Bend quilts are coming to the Richland County Public Library in late September. There will be some public events which will be further announced when the information becomes available. That is the same weekend as a retreat.
Show and Tell included several heart pillows.
Helen Brown, Programs, announced that we need one more volunteer to provide a demonstration of a simple quilt idea at the meeting in March. Let her know if you are interested.
Priscilla Hair’s workshop is this Saturday, February 6th.
Helen Brown introduced the evening’s speaker, Priscilla Hair. Priscilla gave an excellent presentation of her unique, artistic style of fiber art.
Meeting adjourned at 8:50pm. ---Teresa Coolidge
Love Goddess (Charity Quilts) Report
At the February meeting we received 4 quilts for charity.
On Super Bowl Sunday 12 DQ members met at The Quilted Pearl for a charity sew-in.
wo tops were completed and six almost completed. Several other tops were taken home to be quilted. A very successful day!!!!! Thanks to Cheryl DuBois for allowing us to use her shop and to Beth Karr for being there to let us in.
If we are to be involved with Epworth the membership needs to approve this at our next meeting. They (Epworth Home) would like us to start with quilts (twin bed size) for the college students (5 girls). Please think about this and bring any questions/concerns to the March meeting. Remember: A blanket warms the body. A quilt warms the soul.
Supplies for the Children's Garden are winter weather needs -- Kleenex tissues, paper towels, and bacterial wipes. --Mary

–Helen

If we are to be involved with Epworth the membership needs to approve this at our next meeting. They (Epworth Home) would like us to start with quilts (twin bed size) for the college students (5 girls). Please think about this and bring any questions/concerns to the March meeting.
