March 2014 Newsletter From the Studio: I am sitting here waiting for the ‘Ice Storm’ of 2014. I just returned from a longarm conference in Virginia Beach, Virginia and I feel like my head might explode with what I learned. When was the last time you took a class about anything quilting? Whether it was a special technique or a special type of quilt? Would you agree that taking classes keeps us energized and updated on our art as quilters? Well, I do. I find, often, that I need a jump start to get my brain working on some new project. I also love the fact that there is more than one way to accomplish any of our goals. Not only do we learn new things, we meet new people. I love what we do and the many ways that we have available to do it. I love the technical as well as the social aspect of quilting. Pam Kohel (our program chair and Vice-President) is working on some workshop/classes to be shared with other guilds. Plan on participating, learning something new, and meeting some new quilters. Let’s expand our horizons. We are very excited that Stephanie Alexander is teaching a workshop on Saturday April 5th on her amazing scrappy string star quilts. She will show us a couple of her quilts at the meeting this month. Please fill out the flyer sent earlier and mail or give it to me along with a check for $20 by March 15th when we open registration to nonmembers. We already have a non-member waiting list! Demos @ 6:30pm Beth Karr will demonstrate simple walking foot quilting—handling the straight lines, but not in the ditch! Let editor know if you need another copy. --Jodi Devine Quilters’ Guild Challenge 2014: Inspiration from Paintings Participants are to take inspiration from the paintings listed on the slip of paper they draw from the basket. Take the colors, or forms, or whatever catches your imagination about the painting you are given and make it into a quit. The quilt must measure at least 20 inches on any side and no more than 48 inches on any side. The quilts are due at the November meeting. I am very excited to see the results of everyone’s inspiration. I will have more slips of paper with paintings listed at the next few meetings in case you did not attend the February meeting. Try a new technique, stretch your creativity but most of all Have Fun! ---Pam Charity Quilts Update Please come to the meeting early (6 pm) to join in the fun of pinning quilts to ready them for quilting on home sewing machines. Hopefully, we will pin two to four of the 14 quilts ready for quilting at this time. Also, at this month's meeting, Beth Kerr will demonstrate walking foot quilting. Quilt kits and quilts-ready-for-quilting: We will have quilt top packages, as well as quilts ready to home- or long-arm quilt, ready for you to take. Receipt for donation: If you are interested in donating, and want receipts, please be sure to pin your name to the quilt or add it to the DQ Info sheet that might already be attached to the kit. At least one of our three groups is asking that we have name, address and value of the quilt at the time of donation. The count: 26 completed quilts thus far, 0 handed over yet (this was delayed by snow/ice days this week). Approximately, 14 quilts awaiting quilting. Unknown number of quilts in-progress. Thanks to all who have and continue to work on these! ---Ann Minutes for the February 3, 2014 Meeting Meeting was called to order at 6:58pm by President Joyce Greer. Pam Kohl introduced our speaker Suzie Parron, co-author of Barn Quilts and the America Quilt Trail Movement. Program conducted prior to the business portion of meeting. Business meeting was called to order by President Joyce Greer. Teresa Lavern made a motion to approve the minutes of the January 2014 as published in the newsletter. Motion was carried by voice vote. Reports: • Treasurer reported bank balance $5586.36 • Newsletter, no set date for submission of reports. Beth will send email reminder and give several days notice before articles due. • Membership, 41 paid members. • Charity, Palmetto Place Children’s Shelter is at maximum capacity. 20 quilts were delivered and they will be given out on Valentine’s Day. • Block of the Month drawing was won by Maggie. • Mystery Quilt patterns will be delivered at the March meeting. Copies of QSC’s Artful Bra books are available for $10. • Program: Copies of a revised Devine Quilters’ Program 2014 schedule was passed out to members. Challenge Quilt specifications, completed work at least 20 inches on each side but not more than 48 inches each side. Draw inspiration for Challenge entry from artist and work drawn from hat. Old Business: • By-Laws Revision Committee is in need of volunteers. Contact Bernadette Houghton or Joyce Greer. Devine Quilt Guild has been awarded $250.00 as a mini- grant from Quilters of South Carolina. Presentation will be made during the Spring Meeting of Quilters of South Carolina March 22, 2014. No monies will be spent until the check is received. Good of the Order: President Joyce Greer, stated that as owner of a long arm business and Quilt Retreat organizer, One Loose Thread transactions will not be carried out during Devine Quilters’ meetings. All Retreat questions and transactions during meetings should be directed to coordinator Pat Whittle. Any other One Loose Thread business should be discussed only with Joyce Greer and separate from Devine Quilters activities. Business meeting was adjourned at 8:24pm followed by Show and Tell. Next meeting is March 3, 2014. Visitors Our regular meeting is held on the first Monday of the month (second Monday for July and September 2013) at 7:00 pm (social hour and demos begin at 6pm) at Shandon Presbyterian Church at the corners of Blossom, Woodrow and Devine Streets in Columbia, SC. Use the entrance facing Devine Street and ask at the security desk for directions to Davis Hall on the first floor. Our membership is $24.00 per year and is prorated for new members.

 From the Studio:
What a fantastic meeting we had to start our year. I want to thank everyone who has volunteered for different positions in the Guild for the coming year. However, we need a few more people to step up to the plate.
We need:
1.    Someone to set up demo’s for the year. You enjoy them, right? So, help get them scheduled.
2.    Bernadette needs someone on her By-Laws committee. Interested in where our guild goes in the next few years? Now, is the time to set the ground work. Let Bernadette know that you will help her out with this.  (bhoughton560@hotmail.com, 781-307-8445)
3.    Fundraising: The committee did a fantastic job last year organizing and conducting our auction. Now we need 2 or 3 members to step up and help out this year. Our guild really needs this function, so let me know how soon you can start work on this. The board has come up with a few new ideas to add to the mix. You will work in conjunction with Pam Kohel and Donna Royson to keep things fun and interesting while we work to add to our program budget for the next few years.

Programs

For our February Program, Suzi Parron, author of Barn Quilts and the American Quilt Trail will take us on journey along the quilt trail. Her presentation features over one hundred stunning photographs of barn quilts. We will hear stories of some of the individuals who have painted quilt blocks to honor loved ones or their local culture.

We need a place for Suzi to spend the night in case she is too tired to return to Stone Mountain. If you are willing to host Suzi Parron, please call Pam at 803 315-4541.  Thanks.

Charity Quilts Update
 
Wow.   January brings us 19 gorgeous, awesome, completed quilts.  The quilts are ready to go to our January-guild approved  “receiving” organizations:  the Palmetto Place Children’s Shelter, Lexington Extended Care and Dorn VA Medical Center.    Many thanks to Joyce Greer and Donna Royson for doing the January binge quilting of this fantastic batch and to Beth Kerr for having gotten us into this great shape based on the past year’s work.

There They Go:   A discussion with the contact person at Palmetto Place Children’s Shelter set a goal for us to give them quilts for all the children there on Valentine’s Day.   Their maximum capacity is 20 youth (age 2 to teens).  Currently they have 19 including nine boys.   If there are any charity quilts in the pipeline, especially those that would appeal to boys, please contact Ann by the end of January with information about any them.  We hope to give the Shelter representative a choice of quilts since she is aware of the mix of ages and interests of the youth.  This may become an annual thing!   Additional quilts this year will then be offered to our two other groups. 

Let’s get them started:  Anyone willing to help at a 2-3 hour design-fest please call Ann to let her know if you are interested and if any of these dates and times would work for this one-time get together at her house (Forest Lake area): Friday Jan 31 1-3pm, Thursday, February 6 either 1-3 or 6-8pm.   We have four basic design formats (Rail Fence, Altered Rails, Disappearing 9-patch and Scrap Squares), but pulling together the fabric we have and preparing the quilt packages will provide us an opportunity to get together and collaborate.    “By the Way”:  Anyone working on a guild-provided quilt top is of course welcome to add inspiration in the form of swapped fabric or changed plans etc.

We now have a photo gallery and a database that will support ensuring “quilt receipts” from “receiving organizations” can go back to members that are providing material on donated quilts.

Minutes for the January 6, 2014 Meeting

Business meeting was called to order at 6:58pm by President, Joyce Greer.  First official decision was by request of President asking for verbal support selecting an official gavel.  The wooden spoon was chosen and used to call meeting to order.  After a brief welcome and introduction of 2014 Devine Officers, immediate Past President, Sue Spillane was recognized for her service for the past 2 years. 

Welcome and introduction of guests (2) and Happy January Birthday wishes extended to Stephanie Alexander, Mimi Jones, and Donna Royson.

Minutes of the December 2013 meeting by Motion (Pam K.) to approve as published in the December Newsletter were approved and 2nd (Joyce B.) carried by voice vote.

Reports:

Treasurer:  Balance as of meeting time $5786.36

Charity:  Charity quilts completed in 2013, 45.

Newsletter:  Moving to electronic only delivery in February 2014.

Membership: At meeting time, 40 paid memberships for 2014.

New Business:

2014 Budget – Treasurer, Geri Smith passed out a print copy of Devine Quilters Financial Report, Proposed 2014 Budget and 2013 Financial Report.  It was noted $1.00 error in Total Expenses for 2013 as printed because of a rounding issue with computer math.  After a brief discussion a motion (Teresa Laverne) to accept the proposed budget as presented with modification as required to meet Devine needs, 2nd (Beth Stewart-Ozark) motion was passed by voice vote.

Programs for 2014 – 1st Vice President, Pam Kohel passed out a print copy of Devine Programs for 2014.  Pam also asked for 2014 Challenge and program suggestions or comments be sent to her email pkohel@sc.rr.com.

Charity for 2014 – Ann Maletic passed out a print copy, Summary of nominations for Devine Quilters 2014 charity quilt recipients.  3 charities were listed Palmetto Place Children’s Shelter, Lexington Extended Care, and Dorn VA Medical Center.  All have been reviewed by the Executive Board and appear to meet 501.c.3 standards and/or can provide receipts.  After some discussion of other possible recipients a motion (Linda Vandiver ) was made to accept the 3 named charities for the 1st 6 months of 2014, 2nd (Beth Karr).  Motion carried by voice vote.  A suggestion, by President, was made to invite representatives from other suggested charities to talk about their organization.

By-Law review - President stated it had been many years (August, 2001)since Devine By-Laws had been reviewed/revised.   Bernadette Houghton was asked to Chair a Committee to do this.  Volunteers were solicited from members  present and to contact President or Bernadette if you are willing to serve.  If no volunteers come forward, expect call from President.
 
QSC Mini-Grant - Charity Quilts. President Greer discussed an application to the Quilters of SC for a Mini-Grant to assist with expenses associated with Charitable Projects, to be submitted this week.

In 2013 approximately 20% of Devine members participated in Charity quilt work.  All Devine members were encouraged to participate in 2014 projects.

Block of the Month 2014 -Jodi Spillane.  Instructions for February BOM were available.  It is our first “modern” block, white background with bright color notes, 12 ½” unfinished.  BOM is a fundraiser for Devine.  Explanation of BOM “opportunity” participation.  Two (2) ways to win all blocks:

1.      Create block(s) per monthly instructions.  Individuals provide materials.  Bring completed block(s) and $1.00 PER block to meeting.  Receive one (1) opportunity per block/$1.00 donated.

2.      Make no blocks.  Donate $2.00 for one (1) opportunity to win all blocks.  May donate multiples of $2.00 for multiple opportunities. 

All participant names placed in box, stirred well, and one name drawn.

Mystery Quilt 2014 - Jodi Spillane.  Mystery quilt pattern will be by Debbie Caffrey.  Sign up with Jodi by end of February 3, 2014 meeting.  Patterns to be delivered at the March meeting. Cost of pattern: $8.

Fundraiser and Demo volunteers needed.  Get in touch with President or expect call.  Request that all members serve on at least one committee.

Dream Teacher, a motion (Beth K) was made to earmark $1000 of 2014 Devine funds as a continuing line item for a Dream Teacher, defined as a nationally recognized instructor of quilting techniques and/or original ideas and/or patterns.  Motion (Pam K.) was amended and accepted (Beth K) to earmark $2000 of Devine 2014 funds as a continuing line item for a potential Dream Teacher.  2nd (name needed?) Motion carried by voice vote.

Announcement/Good of the Order

Quilts of Valor fundraiser with Marianne Fons and Mary Fons.  Lecture for the day in Columbia at the Bluff road armory on Sept 20 2014.  Tickets on sale at Pieces and Patches beginning February.

Business meeting adjourned at 8:15.  Following Business meeting, Lone Star Quilts exhibited at RCPL were returned and shown.  Program followed with many useful show and tell tools for quilting as well as show and tell individual projects.

Bus Tour to AQS, Paducah, KY  Greater Columbia Quilters & Run Away Travels put together a package for the AQS Show in 2014. A bus will leave Columbia on April 23 and return on April 27. 

Package includes: 4 night's accommodations at KenLake State Park, 4 breakfasts, 2 dinners, snacks/drinks on the bus, gratuities, and bus service to and from the show. Van service will be provided for early AM classes. Two dinners, and all lunches are on your own. Show tickets and class registrations may be obtained on the AQS website beginning in January. Total price is $675. A $100 deposit will secure your reservation with balance to be paid by Jan. 21 2014.

We are having Marianne Fons and Mary Fons lecture for the day in Columbia at the Bluff road armory on Sept 20 2014.  We will use the money to buy fabric and supplies for South Carolina Quilts of Valor and donate a portion of the money to our national Foundation.

We will start selling a limited number of tickets in the next few weeks for $60.00 for the event and $10.00 if you want a box lunch.  Doors will open at 9am and lecture will start at 10 am sharp.  This will be advertised in Love of Quilting magazine so I'm sure we will sell out early.

Anyone who would like to purchase tickets can send a check for $60 for the event or $70 for the event and lunch. (I would encourage staying with us for lunch as we are planning a fun and eventful lunch.)

January 2014 Newsletter

Happy New Year! (well, almost)
I want to start this year off right with giving Sue Spillane a huge Thank You for all she has done for our guild over the last two years. In helping to maintain the stability of the board she has allowed our guild to attract new members and encouraged some of the “old” members to return. I would be remiss if I didn’t also thank all of the other members of the board that are rotating off. You have done wonderful things for our guild and we are grateful. Now, don’t leave just because your job is done. It’s going to be a good year.
Your board has a really exciting year planned for 2014 and I hope that you will help them out by participating in everything we do. There will be demos of new tools and techniques. We will have classes and workshops for all levels of interest. Our speakers at meetings will be interesting and diverse. The Guild “Sew Days” are always a blast. So, mark your calendars for some wonderful nights at Devine.

Programs

The library exhibited Lone Star quilts will be displayed by their owners and will answer any design or technical questions members have. We will have the pleasure of seeing these lovely quilts up close.
Members, please bring in your favorite tool (not rotary cutter) and something you made using the tool. If you gave the item away, bring the tool anyway. I look forward to discovering some new tools or new ways to use old tools.     ---Pam

Love Quilt Programs

We completed 45 quilts I 2013.  21 more are out for long arm quilting and we’ll be calling on all of you to do their bindings.  Plans for 2014 will be announced after the next Board meeting.
Received the following note from the Child Life Specialists at Palmetto Richland Hospital:  “Thank you so much for your generous donation of miniature stockings.  They are adorable ornaments and I know our children and families will enjoy receiving them during the holidays.  We appreciate you all taking the time to make these ornaments and for helping us put smiles on many faces this Christmas.”       --Ann Maletic and Beth Karr

Lone Star Exhibit

It has been a long time coming and going, but the "Lone Star Quilts" will be returned to their owners at the January meeting as promised. The quilters did a wonderful job and will talk about their quilts at this meeting.     --Thank you, Helen
  
Minutes for the December 2, 2013 Meeting

v  The night's activities opened around 5:30 PM with the annual Christmas program.  Members joined groups to sew, turn, press, and beribbon over 200 miniature stockings for distribution to local hospitals.
v  When the stockings were completed, the members enjoyed a pot luck dinner.
v  Sue Spillane called the business part of the meeting to order at 7:30 PM.  The November minutes were approved, and the guild chairs reported on their respective assignments.  Of note were the following announcements:
v    Beth Karr reminded members that she was waiting for recipient nominations for next year's charity quilts.
v    The 2013 and 2014 Board members will meet at Miyo's on Forest Drive on Saturday, December 28th, at noon, to discuss the coming year's programs and to provide a smooth transition from the current officers to next year's electees.
v MaryLou Putlock won December's Block of the Month.  Jodi Spillane indicated that she would continue as coordinator of this activity in 2014.  There will be no block for the month of January.
v In January, members will be treated to a display of the Lone Star quilts that were shown at the Richland County Public Library in November and December.
v Members are asked to bring to the January meeting a tool they have used to make a project in the past.  The tool may be one of the quilter's own invention or one that is traditional in nature.
v The January meeting will be held on Monday, January 6th.
v Due to illness in his family, Tommy Leitner was not able to be present at the December meeting to service sewing machines.  He has promised to honor the $55 price he offered guild members if they call him in the next couple of weeks to have their machines looked at and refer to the Devine Quilters December meeting.
v Beth Karr reminded members that, if they have events they wish to see posted in the newsletter, they should email her the details directly.
v Show and tell followed the business part of the meeting. The meeting adjourned at 8:10p.

            The National Quilt Museum in Paducah is in the process of raising funds to support its 27,000 sq. ft. space and to promote traveling and on-site exhibits.  To help with this effort, the museum staff is asking quilters to donate a miniature or full-size quilt.  These donations will be made available for purchase in the museum shop or will be auctioned at the live events the museum hosts annually.
Donations should be made, if possible, by April 1, 2014, and should be sent to: The National Quilt Museum, 215 Jefferson Street, Paducah, KY 42001.
            Please include a note with your guild name, address, and contact information, as well as the name of the quilt you are donating.  When the quilt sells, you will be sent a receipt listing the purchase price.  You may assign a value to the quilt, but the Museum cannot guarantee that your assigned value will be met.  All donations are tax deductible as allowed by law.
            There are no limits to the number of quilts you may donate and the museum welcomes multiple donations.
QSC District 4 Annual Meeting
You are invited to attend the 10th annual District 4 meeting to be held Saturday, February 22, 2014 at 10 am at the St. Matthews First Baptist Church, 303 West Bridge Street, St. Matthews, SC.  You do not need to be a member of Quilters of South Carolina or a guild to attend.  We will have lots of fun with quilters from all over District 4.
