March 2013 Newsletter

From the President:

It is Saturday (approx. 5:00 pm) and it is snowing out as well as some sleet. This am when we left Irmo it had just started to rain.  When we got to the Shop Hop in Lancaster, SC it was starting to snow--flakes up to nickel in size.  Continuing to Gastonia, NC, the rain ended.  Then rain almost almost all the way home.  What crazy weather.  Ten minutes later the sun is now out, "stuff" will melt.  It was a great to go on our Shop  Hop, which included Mary Jo's and Sew Much Fun.

Thank you Margaret for your demonstration of three generations of quilts.  Very informative and well presented.
--Sue Spillane

Programs

On March 4th we welcome special guest Aby Dolinger, an original member of Devine Quilters.  Aby and her husband, Army Chaplain Randy Dolinger, continue to be stationed wherever the Army sends them.  Once asked what she does when they are stationed where no quilt guilds exist, Aby enthusiastically responds, "I start one!"  Her presentation, "It's Not About the Quilts" is a lecture that friendship among quilters is the real treasure and includes a trunk show of the friendship quilts she has collected during military moves....even some from her time in Columbia.

Non-members are always welcome; however, to help defray the costs of bringing Aby to Columbia, we ask our March guests to pay a $5.00 fee.

The annual Devine Challenge will be issued at the March meeting.

A few spaces remain for the March 2nd workshop with Aby at Greenhill Baptist Church in West Columbia.  Detailed information is available in the February newsletter or you can contact Program Chair, Stephanie Alexander, at SALEXA1636@aol.com for more information.

Mark your calendars for the Inaugural Devine Quilters Sew Free Sew Day on April 20th, 2013.  See the flyer attached to the newsletter to register.

Devine Demos

Our Demo for March will be by Donna Royson: Anita’s arrowhead the ‘slick’ way, as shown in ‘Rotary Cutter Revolution’. This will also be the block for the month for March.

Lone Star Exhibit at Richland Co. Library

The Devine Quilters Guild will have an exhibit featuring the Lone Star Quilt design.

1. We define a Lone Star Quilt (also known as The Mathematical Star, The Star of Bethlehem, Star of the East,, Morning Star, etc.) as made of what appears to be diamond shapes to form an “eight point star, points from the center out“. The star may be appliquéd or pieced.

2. All quilts must have a hanging sleeve that ends before the edge of the quilt on both sides and a dowel that extends beyond the hanging sleeve but cannot be seen from the front of the quilt. The dowel must be large enough to insert a screw hanger in the end so that the library can hang the quilt. The library will hang any size quilt including king size as long as the dowel supplied by the quilter will support the quilt. They are willing to add extra hangers on the back of the quilt, as long as the quilter has slit the hanging sleeve to enable the attachment of more hangers. Talk to Helen if you don’t understand this.

3. Variations of the Lone Star are acceptable.

4.  All quilts are due; finished, labeled, with hanging sleeve and dowel rod, at the Devine Quilter’s meeting on September 9th.

5.  Only members of the Devine Guild may participate in the show.

6.  The Committee reserves the right to reject quilts for pet hair, smoke and other odors.  The Library reserves the right to not hang an item if it is contrary to their mission.
---Helen Brown

Love Quilt Programs

We received 2 finished Love Quilts at the February meeting.  Let’s keep it up!  I will be bringing a few tops to quilt and kits to each meeting for some of you to take home and finish.
This makes 17 received this year, with deliveries:  9 for P.H. Breast Cancer,  6 for Children's Garden and 2 TBD.

Financial Report

Minutes for the February 4, 2013 Meeting

Jodie Spillane conducted the pre-meeting demonstration on constructing baskets using clothesline wrapped with fabric.  She brought several completed baskets to inspire the members to make their own from scrap fabrics they might have in their stash.

Sue Spillane convened the members and introduced the new members and visitors.

The minutes for the January meeting were approved.  Pat Harwell, who volunteered to be the independent reviewer of the guild’s books, approved the financial report for FY 2012.  Geri Smith then took the floor to explain the proposed budget for FY 2013.  There was some discussion about how income was balancing against the proposed expenditures.  The members generally agreed that, at this stage of the game, the proposed budget was acceptable.  A motion to accept the budget as proposed was made from the floor, seconded, and the budget passed with no opposition.

Helen Brown won the January BOM blocks.  Queen Charlotte’s Crown was proposed for the February BOM.  The block’s directions, for those who missed the February meeting, are available here in the newsletter.

The evening’s program featured Margaret Kaufman, who brought a trunk show of her family’s quilts.  Margaret gave a wonderful presentation of the antique quilts and included some of her own quilts to inspire us.

After an intermission which allowed the members to view Margaret’s quilts up close, the members took up the question of whether the guild should change its status from 501(c)4 to a 501(c)3.  Given the cost associated with the change, the members decided to retain the current status.

Helen Brown asked all members who plan to submit a Lone Star quilt for the Fall exhibit at the library to please fill out a form of intent.  The finished quilts must be brought to the September meeting, and they will be taken to the library in October.  Helen will provide hanging sleeve instructions and other size requirements/limitations in the near future.

The March meeting will feature Abigail Dolinger, who will also conduct a class on March 2nd, from 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM, at Green Hill Baptist Church in West Columbia.  The class is called “Monkeyshines,” in reference to the tricks you will learn.  You will have four blocks large enough to complete a baby quilt at the end of the day.  You may also choose to do “Pinwheel Panache” if that project suits your needs better than “Monkeyshines.” The workshop will be limited to 20 quilters.  To see if seats are still available, contact Stephanie Alexander at salexa1636@aol.com or 865-1483.

Kudos to Leslie Mullins who received a grant from the International Machine Quilters Association (IMQA) to attend the Machine Quilters Showcase in Wichita, Kansas, in May.  The showcase is called “Dreamcatcher” and information is available on line for those who are interested.

Block of the month

The inaugural Block of the Month (BOM) brought in 78 6 inch (or 19 12”) blocks, and raised $37!

The BOM for the March meeting is to be done in lime green (any fabric that falls in the lime green family) and white/white on white fabrics.  If you didn’t get the pattern at the meeting, here is the link: http://www.quilterscache.com/Q/QueenCharlottesBlock.html

Bring your block(s) and $1 per block to be entered into the drawing for all the blocks.  If you didn’t make a block but want to participate in the drawing, you pay $2 per entry.
