April 2012 Newsletter

From the President:
The pollen is here. Yellow stuff everywhere. It must be spring, so where was winter. Jodi and I went on a shop hop Saturday. To Aiken area and Georgia--more allergy problems due to the pines. We were finally well from all the illness we had in February. Now back to quilting.
I really enjoyed the Hoffman Challenge that came to visit us. Thank you Leslie for letting us see them all. She then presented our own challenge, using paint chips from paint companies. Should prove interesting. Read the revised directions carefully.
Keep on quilting, share your knowledge, come the hour before the meeting, so you can meet and great new and old members. No Board meeting this month, but there will be one in May.

Programs
The program for April will be presented by Linda Barrett - award winning quilter and pattern designer - How A Simple Quilt Can Look Spectacular.
Mark your calendars now for a very fun time with the Gypsy Quilter coming in May! She will bepresenting three workshops. Come and have fun Saturday May 5th making a Lazy Girl Purse from 1 - 5 pm at Saxe Gotha Presbyterian Church located at 5503 Sunset Blvd, Lexington. Theworkshop fee will be $25.00 (plus a pattern fee.)
Sunday May 6th we will be be tackling "Circles Aren't Scary" from 11 - 5 pm at the Old Mill inLexington. The fee will be $30.00. Monday's workshop is still under discussion and I will let youknow as soon as possible. It will be presented at the Old Mill from 10 - 4 pm
There is limited seating so please be prepared to sign up for the workshops at the next meeting.
At the March meeting the challenge project was issued. Briefly this year's challenge for the members of the guild is creating a quilt with two randomly-selected colors, black and white, and any other color of the quilter's choosing (that is, three colors and black and white). The randomly selected colors were picked from a bag of paint chips brought to the meeting. After the selection process, members were allowed to swap one or both colors with other members. The members were told that prints and solid fabrics are fine, and that they can use as many fabrics as they want as long as the colorways are represented in each of them. Quilts will be due for exhibit and judging at the November meeting. The bag of chips will be available at the next meeting.
Charity Quilts Program
At the March meeting, 4 completed quilts were turned (2 child, 2 adult).
Plans are underway for the July 9 meeting, where we will be cutting kits for future charity quilts.
Please keep in mind as you reorganize and/or thin out your stashes—we can always use quality fabric donations: yardage for backings or for cutting up for kits, and fat quarters and 2.5” strips that you no longer need (how did that fabric get in that bundle/jelly roll?). I’ll collect them at all meetings. Leslie has found a neat, simple pattern for using the strips—we’ll cut in July.
We have a roll of batting—let me know your top’s size and I’ll add 8” each direction and get it to you at the next meeting or some mutually agreeable location. Desired quilt sizes: any size forpreschoolers. Adult: lap size for use during chemo—approx 40-48 inches wide by 5 to 6 feet long.
The 2012 running total is:
Adult completed: 4
Child completed: 6 Total: 8
Delivered to Breast Center: 0
Delivered to Children’s Garden: 0

Minutes for the March 5, 2012 Meeting
Sue Spillane called the meeting to order at 7 PM. Guests were invited to introduce themselves.
The minutes from the last meeting were approved.
The treasurer and the chairs for charity, programs, membership, and the newsletter reported.
The speaker for the April meeting is unable to attend, so Linda Barrett will substitute for her. The title of her presentation is to be determined.
The Threads of Time Quilt Guild from Saxe Gotha Presbyterian Church in Lexington shared sponsorship of a show of Hoffman Challenge quilts from 2011. The members had an opportunity to study the workmanship and designs after Leslie Mullins (Devine Quilters) and Sue Gerdes (Threads of Time) introduced each quilt individually and read the makers' descriptions of the pieces.
Leslie briefly described this year's challenge for the members of the guild: creating a quilt with two randomly-selected colors, black and white, and any other color of the quilter's choosing (that is, three colors and black and white). The randomly-selected colors were picked from a bag of paint chips Leslie had brought with her to the meeting. After the selection process, members were allowed to swap one or both colors with other members. Leslie told the members that prints and solid fabrics are fine, and that they can use as many fabrics as they want as long as the colorways are represented in each of them. Quilts will be due for exhibit and judging at the November meeting.
Those members who wish to participate in the challenge but who were not in attendance at the March meeting are asked to do the following: Go to the paint store or paint department of a box store and ask a person there (clerk, shopper, friend you drag along) to pick out two color chips at random. No cheating - it's not fair to the members who got cheddar and fuschia to work with.
The Lone Star quilt exhibit has been postponed until 2013. The library has asked that we includean educational component, so each quilter will have to write a brief commentary about the quilt she is submitting for exhibition. Our guild is forming a committee to organize this event. Details to follow.
Show and Tell: The scholarship quilt for this year was shown. One of Kathy Hauser's quilts will be used as a fund-raiser in the coming years. Kudos to Geri Smith and Anita Bowen for having quilts accepted into the Lancaster AQS and the Paducah quilt shows, respectively.
The meeting adjourned at 8:15 PM in order to give members time to study the Hoffman Challenge quilts.
