Newsletter November 2012

From our President - Sue Spillane
Here I am watching the weather channel waiting to see where Sandy is going. (hurricane).  Jodi and Hawthorne are due to be in New York City next week for the filming of the Puppy Bowl. We may be celebrating her Birthday here.  If any one picked up the charity quilt that Joyce Greer did and I am to quilt, please return to the Guild.  If you want to finish it, you may.
Get busy on your paint chip challenge.  You only have two weekends to go.  Looking forward to seeing the results.
Be sure and come early (6:30 pm) for the early demo.  The first one was well received.
A Big THANK YOU to Leslie Mullins for conducting our silent auction.  WE DID WELL!!!!  A big thanks for the members for participating.
Sue Spillane.

October 2012 Devine Quilt Guild Meeting Minutes

Joyce Greer gave a demonstration of straight-line quilting on a sewing machine for the members prior to the start of the business meeting.  The purpose was to help some of the newer members gain quilting confidence so that they could not only improve their quilts for personal use but also help with the charity projects that the guild sponsors.

Sue Spillane called the official meeting to order a bit later than usual to give the members time to look at the items for bid at the silent auction.

The officers and program chairs gave their reports first.  Then, the ad hoc committee chairs reported in.

Lone Star Project:  Helen Brown told the members that she would be providing at the November meeting a letter-of-intent form for those members who plan to participate in the Richland County Public Library quilt exhibit scheduled for October-December 2013.  Details about the submission and jurying process will be provided at the November meeting as well.  The library can hang 35 quilts.

The members volunteered information about upcoming quilt shows in the month of October.  Next month, the West Palm Beach Quilt Show will open for three days, starting on November 8th.  The show will be held at the Palm Beach County Convention Center and will feature the 2012 World Quilt Competition XVI Tour quilts.

Members also noted that Walterboro has a call out for art quilts.

The Devine Quilters will sponsor a block-of-the-month challenge in 2013; Jodie Spillane will provide details soon.  Joyce Greer, Leslie Mullins, and Sally Somerall  will take charge of planning the pre-meeting demonstrations, the first of which started this evening.

The slate of officers for 2013 was revealed.  The nominees/continuing office holders are:

President: Sue Spillane
First VP: Stephanie Alexander
Second VP: Pat Harwell
Charity: Beth Karr
Programs: Stephanie Alexander
Secretary: Bernadette Houghton

Demonstrations Chair: Joyce Greer
Block-of-the-Month: Jodie Spillane

Members are advised that the slate will be voted on in November.

Leslie Mullins was awarded a Judges Recognition for her quilt titled "Sunrise in Fossil Canyon" entered in the Small Art Quilt category at the 2012 Quilt Fest of Jacksonville (FL).

During Show and Tell, Jodie Spillane announced that Hawthorne the Hedgehog has been chosen as a cheerleader in the 2013 Puppy Bowl.  Jodie and Hawthorne will be traveling to NY together for the event.

Other Notes:

September 2012 Devine Quilters Meeting Minutes

Sue Spillane called the meeting to order at 7 PM.  The minutes for the previous month were approved.  Sue then received reports from the officers and program chairs.  There was no update given on the Lone Star project, but updates will be forthcoming before the winter holidays.

Sue asked Beth Karr and Jodie Spillane to join her in recruiting members to fill out the slate of officers and chairs for the 2013 guild year.  Sue agreed to stay on another year as president to provide continuity, but asked that our meetings start at 6:30 PM, abbreviating the social hour.  Members voted unanimously to begin at 6:30 PM, as of the October meeting.

There was some discussion about the lack of activities the guild sponsors for new quilters and recent members.  The senior (longer term) members thought that we might need a return to some basic quilting demos and projects like block-of-the-month.  As part of this revitalization effort, Leslie Mullins, Sally Somerall, and Joyce Greer agreed to form a committee that would coordinate pre-meeting demos.  Jodi Spillane agreed to host the Block-of-the-Month challenge.

The members also agreed that we need to spend more time on the Show & Tell part of our meeting to discuss techniques, tell about problems encountered while constructing the quilt, and generally have more dialogue.

Members also suggested having a suggestion jar for meeting and activity ideas.

Joyce Greer announced that the Spring quilt camp registration was open.

Sue encouraged all members to come prepared to the auction next month as the guild needs to significantly increase the amount of funds in the treasury.

Members announced quilt-related events that were coming up in September and October.

After the business meeting was adjourned, Leslie Mullins conducted a Zentangle workshop.

(Bernadette Houghton thanks Francine Antoinette for recording the September minutes when she was absent.)

December will include our usual sewing of mini stockings for distribution at our local Children’s Hospital.  I’ll have a sign up list for things to bring at the November meeting.
The 2012 running total is:

Delivered to Breast Center:  4   Delivered to Children’s Garden: 13    Total delivered:  17

I am so excited to see the marvelous creations that will be presented for the challenge!  It is a "blind" challenge so please try to get it to me without others seeing what you have made.  I will be there at 6 to set up the quilt racks to hold the entries.
Please email at: notfromheresc@aol.com to let me know you will have an entry and how I should display it - hang or set on a table - so I can get enough of what is needed.
Everyone is invited to Threads of Time silent auction that is taking place Saturday November 3rd - starting at 10 a.m. - at Saxe Gotha Presbyterian Church.
And if you get a chance before the end of October - go by the Lexington County Main Library to see the display of the challenge items that were made by your sister quilters.  The display will be taken down Wednesday October 31 after lunch.
