May 2012 Newsletter
From our President
Where has April gone? We thoroughly enjoyed Linda Barrett from Lexington for her program on how to spruce up our "dull" quilts. Amazing what can be done. Now we all can practice on our own Charity Quilts.
We need to support our guild and the programs that Leslie has for. I know I will not be at the May meeting as I will be at Quilt camp, but plan to take a class from Lanette Edens on the Sunday before. If you know friends that quilt and do not belong to a guild, bring them to hear Lanette. Friends from other Guilds are encouraged to visit.
I want to thank Pat Whittle for taking over the Newsletter for the remainder of this year. If you have items you want put in the Newsletter--please get them to her by the 15th of the month. Her email address is: whittle4@bellsouth.net
Lynne Flatley will be leaving us and returning to MA and a better job. We wish her farewell and happy quilting.

The meeting was convened at 7:00 PM by Sue Spillane. She turned the chair over briefly to Jodie Spillane. Jodie presented the scholarship quilt, which was made by Connie Richardson, to Francine Antoinette, the winner of the scholarship quilt raffle.
Sue then introduced Linda Barrett, the speaker for the evening. Linda is the owner of Threads and Traditions in Lexington (http://www.threadsandtraditionsquilting.com), a fullservice long-arm quilting studio. Linda spoke about the techniques which help to make a simple pieced quilt pattern look dramatic and award-winning. Linda has won numerous awards and has been featured in “McCall’s Quilting” magazine.
After Linda’s presentation, the members recessed to allow the guild members to look at Linda’s quilts.
After the recess, the business meeting was called to order. Sue reminded the Board members that there would be a meeting next month at 6:30 in the front parlor. The minutes from the previous meeting were approved. Sue briefly reviewed the financial status of the guild’s treasury.
The program chair conducted the paint chip lottery again for those members who were not in attendance last month.
The membership chair asked each member to check with her to see if a new guild application form was required even if one was completed at the start of this program year; some went missing and she wants to make sure that the proper addresses and phone numbers are on
file.
Lynn Flatley, the newsletter coordinator, is leaving the Columbia area, so a new newsletter coordinator is being recruited. Interested members were asked to contact Sue Spillane. There is another scholarship quilt being raffled, and tickets for purchase were circulated to the members. The scholarships provide support to those members who need financial assistance to attend the retreats.
Joyce Greer announced that registration has been opened for the August retreat at Camp Gravatt.
The Design Group announced that their quilts are being displayed at Still Hopes, 1 Still Hopes Drive, West Columbia (off Knox Abbott Drive). Directions to the retirement community can be found at: http://www.stillhopes.org/
Laurie Wozniak completed a quilt for the American Beauty Batting Calendar competition. She will send the quilt off for judging in mid-April.
The meeting was adjourned at 8:40 PM.

Charity Quilts - Beth Karr
At the April meeting, 2 completed quilts were turned in (2 child, 0 adult).
Plans are underway for the July 9 meeting, where we will be cutting kits for future charity quilts. Please keep in mind as you reorganize and/or thin out your stashes—we can always use quality fabric donations: yardage for backings or for cutting up for kits, and fat quarters and 2.5” strips that you no longer need (how did that fabric get in that bundle/jelly roll?). I’ll collect them at all meetings. We have a roll of batting—let me know your top’s size and I’ll add 8” each direction and get it to you at the next meeting or some mutually agreeable location. Desired quilt sizes: Any preschooler size for The Children’s Garden. Adult: lap size for use during chemo—approx 40-48 inches wide by 5 to 6 feet long.
