February 2012 Newsletter

From the President:
2012 is actually here. It's hard to believe that I great you as the 2012 Devine Quilters new
president. Lynn Lucas did such a great job. I've got big shoes to fill.

The beginning of a new year is a perfect time to renew and to refresh our memories. I am
including the 5 purposes of Devine Quilters (as written in our by-laws).
a. To promote the art of quilting and quilt making by workshops, lectures and exhibitions
offered to members and the general public.
b. To preserve the heritage of quilt making and quilt appreciation.
c. To provide and informational base for those interested in quilt making and related arts
and encourage excellence in those areas.
d. To provide a source of inspiration and fellowship for quilt enthusiasts.
e. To enrich our lives by the commitment of donations related to quilts and other fiber arts
(i.e. quilts, scholarships, time or efforts) to deserving organizations,
hospitals, groups, or individuals.

Our meetings may start at 7:00 PM, but we have the room from 6-7 as well. Please feel free to
come early and socialize with your fellow quilters.

I plan a board meeting at 6:30 PM on the same day and will meet in the Bridal room.

Jodi and I will be back from our cruise in time for the February meeting.

Where Do We Go From Here? The Status of Quilt Scholarship in South Carolina
presented by Jane Przybysz
Executive Director, McKissick Museum
Where Do We Go From Here? The Status of Quilt Scholarship in South Carolina
In this presentation, she will provide an overview of the SC Quilt Documentation project that was
organized by McKissick in the 1980s, share images of quilts in the permanent collection, and offer
a glimpse of a 400+ piece textile collection that has been offered to McKissick.

Charity Quilt Program

At the January meeting, 2 completed quilts were turned in and 2 quilts were passed on to be
bound.
I have ordered a new bolt of batting and small, woven labels.
I encourage members practice their quilting skills on these quilts. A lot can be done with
simple walking foot quilting—straight line, gentle curves, etc. I need to get back to playing with simple free motion—for some reason large stippling stresses me—I prefer large, random crossover loops!
Desired sizes:
any size for preschoolers.
Adult: lap size for use during chemo—approx 40-48 inches wide by 5 to 6 foot long.

The 2012 running total is:

Adult completed:
0
Child completed:
2
Delivered to Breast Center:
0
Delivered to Children’s Garden:
0

Minutes for the January 9, 2012 Meeting

Sue Spillane, the Devine Quilter’s president for 2012, called the meeting to order at 6:30 PM. She
introduced the new officers, and gave a brief description of the evening’s program. The minutes
from the December meeting were approved. There was no new or old business to discuss.

Beth Karr showed a finished charity quilt and distributed two quilts to members for binding.

Verity Creekmore, the District 4 representative for the Quilters Guild of South Carolina, spoke
about the group’s upcoming activities and included a call for child-size quilts to donate to area
hospitals. Complete information about meeting dates and membership can be found at
www.quiltersofsc.org.

Two announcements were made:
* The Cobblestone Quilters Guild is sponsoring “A Celebration of Quilts 2012: Southern Comforts.”
The exposition will be held at Gaillard Auditorium in Charleston. More information about the
event, to be held March 2-3, can be found at www.charlestonquiltguild.com.
* The Charlotte Quilters Guild is hosting “Reach Out,” a quilt show at the Metrolina Trade Show
Exposition Center on March 9-10. A $1 discount is available to attendees, and can be downloaded
from the guild’s Web site. The address is www.charlottequiltersguild.org.

After welcoming the attendees from neighboring quilt guilds who were invited to share the
evening’s program, Sue turned the meeting over to Joyce Greer. Joyce introduced a video entitled
“Jan Krentz Teaches You to Make Lone Star Quilts.” The group previewed the video to see if any of the members would like to purchase it for the upcoming exhibition scheduled to be held in the Fall at the Richland County Public Library. The video may be purchased, along with several other books on quilting, at www.jankrentz.com. The Web site has some free patterns, quilting tips, and Jan’s newsletter and class schedule.

The meeting adjourned at 9:00 PM.
