December 2011 Newsletter

From the President:
Thanksgiving is just around the corner! I hope that all of you have a wonderful day planned! We are continuing in our new tradition of surf and turf for our Thanksgiving meal as opposed to the traditional turkey. This set my brain to thinking and pondering about what other people eat on Thanksgiving. I wonder what was really eaten in the early days. Maybe possum, fish, deer, raccoon, rabbit. I doubt it was butterball or honeysuckle. Then they had to catch, kill, skin and gut before they could cook. Do you think that they just ate the choice part or did they use the whole animal? Was there a quilting bee going on as the community pitched in together? What did the men do without football? So many questions to answer.
One thing I think for certain was the giving of thanks was and is the most important part. I am thankful for all of you. I am thankful for my family and friends. I am thankful that we no longer cook over an open hearth and sew everything by hand, in the light of a candle after gathering eggs, milking the cow and all the chores I can't even think of. I am thankful that we live in a wonderful country that has Thanksgiving. I am grateful that God has blessed us all so much by putting us in this time and place and for all that He does.
I wish each and every one of you a Safe and Happy Holiday and wish you safe journey. Happy Thanksgiving!! Lynn Lucas

Programs

December is the Christmas party. Bring potluck, and help with our annual stockings for the Pediatrics ER project. The following have promised to bring:
Sewers: Bring sewing machines with ¼” foot or measure, neutral sewing thread (exempt from bringing food): Helen Brown, Sue Spillane, Deborah Hotchkiss, Gretchen Brown.
Ironers: Bring iron and ironing surface (can be small surface—stockings will be about 4” in size): Sallie Schirm, Mary Cross.
Trimmers/turners/finishers: bring fabric scissors (turners, ribbon and large needles will be provided): Wilma Black, Dee Doebler, Pat Whittle, Jodi Spillane, Joyce Browder, Sandra Baker, Lynne Flatley, Amy Ramsay.
--Beth Karr

First of all, thanks to everyone who has finished the challenge quilts. I was amazed at the imagination used to create them. Congrats to the winners, Helen Brown and Leslie Mullins.
December is our Christmas party. But before we play, we have to make the Christmas stockings for kids. It always amazes me how fast we get them finished.
I plan on having a dice game with lots of prizes, so bring shin guards and elbow protection--you know how rowdy we get when stealing the favorite things someone else has. No skill required, just a long arm and a quick shake of the dice is all that is needed.
Also I will have a guessing game, so bring quarters to play. How high can you count? Take a chance and win a nice prize, closest guess will be announced at 8:30.

November 2011 Newsletter

From the President:

A very dear friend gave me a most wonderful framed Quiltation this past month. It says "Every life is lived on day at a time." and "Every quilt is made one stitch at a time." I love this, as it touched me to the core. These words are so true! How lucky we are to have the most wonderful opportunity to do both! I thank God, that all of you are part of both in my life! I pray that you will treasure one another also as we continue on this crazy quilt of life.
Looking forward to our next meeting and seeing what you all do for the challenge quilts.
