October 2011 Newsletter

From the President:
Howdy to all!
I have recently had some time to spend thinking and pondering the meaning of life which as I have said before, according to Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy is "42". Thinking most often leads to pondering and in the words of the Brain "Are you thinking what I am thinking Pinkey?" This particular pondering session revolved around family, and had a path something like this:
When we were small and growing up, our family ( mom, dad and siblings), did everything the only "right" way. You know the drill; our family had the best Thanksgiving or Christmas tradition, had the only vacation spot at the beach that was worth going to, ate in the only good barbeque place, went to the best fish camp, sat the correct number of rows back from the screen at the movie theater and so on. Everything was "right" in our world. Then we would have a family reunion and along would come scatter minded Aunt Tommie who ate chex mix or as she called it 'nuts and bolts' for breakfast; or the nutty Uncle Bryant who no one knew what he really did, but he lived in California and had been married lots of times to unusual women, including one that the grownups whispered something about her and McCarthy (but who was McCarthy?); or the cousins who rarely came and everyone whispered about before they arrived, but when they showed up they were lots of fun and brought beads from New Orleans, took a tin trumpet down from the mantle and blew it; or fun loving Aunt Mollie who slid down the slide and swung on the swings . We loved this extension of our family and recognized that they didn't do it "right" and used miracle whip instead of mayonnaise and although we did not understand them we loved them and they were all family.
Then we grew up and got married. Now everything changed once again as we tried to blend his strange family traditions into our "right" family traditions. As time went on we adopted our own "right" traditions. Now we added free and crazy Aunt Suzie to the mix who just ate mustard, not even the weird miracle whip; and a new Grandmother-in-law who burned her paper trash in a barrel in the back yard, loved to throw her food trash down the bank of the creek for the 'critters' to eat, ate pork rinds for dinner and loved to quilt. Once again we loved this extension of our family and although we did not understand them we loved them, they were all family.
I carry a part of each and every one of these wonderful family members in my heart and they have all contributed in making me part of who I am today. In addition to loving our family, we also tolerate and respect the differences, recognizing that all the individual pieces fit together to make up our family. After all, it is the only "right" family.
It occurs to me that a family is very much like a quilt with all the pieces unable to stand alone, but together form something that will keep you warm and safe and protected for years to come.
Going one step further, a family is like a quilt, and a quilt is like a quilt guild. We all came to quilting in our own way and have strengths in different areas that allow us to share with one another and expand our horizons. I thank God for all of you! I am fortunate to be blessed to be a part of such a wonderful family of quilters. How wonderful that we love and respect our guild family members and embrace the differences that we all bring to our group so that we can continue to grow in our friendship with one another and learn from each other as we all strive to the same goal: Enjoying each other and our craft.
