May 2010 Newsletter

From the President:
Here is hoping all are doing well and quilting away!
When I was a child one of my favorite meals was my mother's salmon croquets and cole slaw. No one else's has ever tasted as good as hers did. When I grew up and set up my grown up house, one cold winter’s night I made salmon croquets and cole slaw, they did not taste the same. Mom swears I make them the same but over the years I just gave up on the salmon croquets and adopted a new way of making slaw. Did mom's taste better because they were seasoned with love?
What does this have to do with quilting you ask? Well, I will tell you. Recently I was under the weather and just wanted to cuddle up and nap. I have a quilt that my husband’s grandmother gave us shortly after we were married, and it is without a doubt my favorite quilt. I so wanted to nap under it but it is very much like the Velvetine Bunny: old, frayed and worn. Since I was ill I did not want to make it germy and in need of being washed, so I cuddled up under one on my own quilts (one I have made). Much to my dismay it did not feel the same. It occurred to me that the difference was love. One of the reasons I love being a longarmer is that it is a very heartwarming experience. When I am quilting a quilt that someone else has made, very often I can feel the love that went into each and every stitch especially if it is a gift for one of their family or friends, the love just comes pouring forth. My quilts are most often made for others with love going into each and every stitch. The ones that I have made for me just don't have the same feel, much like those salmon croquets and cole slaw. The favorite quilt of which I am speaking is the only quilt that was ever given to me and it was given jointly to my husband and I. My family was not a family of quilters - they were sewers but not quilters - and I was so fortunate that my grandmother in-law was a quilter. I wonder how many of you have had the same experience with your own cooking or quilts.
Thus salmon croquets, cole slaw and quilts are the same in my book. I want my mother's salmon croquets and cole slaw and I want a quilt made from the heart and full of love just for me. I know we are grownups and wants are just that, but how many of you feel the same? My poor husband, I had him proof read this last night, this morning at breakfast he said he had been thinking about it and if he could sew he would make me one, because he knows that feeling of which I was speaking, seems he feels it each and every time he naps under one of the quilts made for him.
After sleeping on it myself it occurs to me why charity quilts are so valuable in the healing process. To know that someone you know has made you a most wonderful quilt is a heart warming experience. To know that a stranger was thinking of you and showed such a random act of kindness and love must be overwhelming. Lets keep quilting! --- Lynn

Love Goddess (Charity Quilts) Report
Delivered quilts and "stuff" to Children's Garden and quilts to PH Breast Cancer Center. As usual they are thrilled with what we give them.
Several people have told me they are working on single bed quilts for Epworth. They should be at least 70" x 90". We will give to the college age girls first as there are only five of them. Then we can select a cottage.
For next month please bring wipes and puddings for the Children's Garden.

Thanks to everyone who participated in the fund-raiser on Monday, April 5. We raised a total of $260 by participating in a survey developed for the research study called "Understanding Personal and Social Aspects of Faith and Practice Related to Health". The survey is sponsored by the John Templeton Foundation, Duke University and The Arnold School of Public Health of the University of South Carolina. The purpose of the study is to understand those connections with others in the community, which include faith communities, and how this affects the health of adults of all ages more fully. --Libby

“Donation” Quilt Workshop for Devine

Meet at Greenhill Baptist Church, 1734 Augusta Road, West Columbia
Saturday, May 15 from 10 am until 2 pm. Bring your lunch and all supplies you will need to applique - by HAND! We have templates and fabric.
Please email Linda Vandiver at qltnlinda@aol.com if you can come.
There are only 6 more steps to complete our quilt and we really want everyone to have a "hand" in this project. What's left? Well, after the leaves are appliqued, we have to applique the vine, put the top together, sandwich it, and have it quilted and then bind it and put on a label.
--Linda

Your quilt should include a recognizable piece of the challenge fabric, which you purchased from the guild (as a fund raiser). Your name will then be added to the list of participants in the challenge. Your finished quilt must be at the 11/1/10 meeting. Theme: any take on the world of insects. You may use a traditional insect pattern, make a quilt with delightful insects or show a world that insects would surely inhabit.
