August 2010 Newsletter

From the President:

Howdy to All,

It is hard to believe that July is over half gone. Where is the summer going? I am sure that you have been as busy as I have with out of town guests, trips to wonderful and enchanting places and just plain old fun. The July meeting was in a word yummy. I love ice cream treats all too much for certain. I am looking forward to the August meeting that will be yummy too.
Hope you are doing fine in the heat. We just have to remember to water the garden early. The tomatoes are wonderful and our first eggplants should be ready within a few days.
Well I am off to quilt-- hope to see every one in August if not before.
 ---Lynn

Programs

Love Quilt Meeting As is our tradition, the August meeting is dedicated to quilting for charity.
We will meet at Davis Hall any time after 6:00 p m to start sewing the quilt kits assembled by our wonderful members, who used their time and equipment to assemble these under the leadership of our dedicated Love Goddess (Mary).
We need you to bring your sewing machines, about four people can bring irons (so if you would like to be an ironer would you please call or e-mail me) and the others will be helpers. Everyone is needed! Even if you only come to entertain we need that too!
We also will have food and fellowship. Please bring your favorite foods (we love the taste treats). Plates, silver, napkins and drinks will be supplied.
We will also have “Show and Tell” so bring all your lovely items.
---Helen Brown

Love Goddess's Report
August's meeting is the charity workshop for this year. We are making Tumbling Blocks quilts. Lynn Lucas and Stephanie Alexander will have their Accu-cut machines and will cut the fabric you all bring. Some 'kits' have been put together and are ready to be sewn. The early birds can get started as soon as they arrive. Unfortunately the Love Goddess will not be able to attend, but she does have cherubs who are fabulous helpers and will guide you through the process. So please help them help me.
What to bring:
1. fabric -- scrappy or coordinated -- at least 8" x 8" square -- 8" strips are fine
2. machines and sewing accoutrements
3. ironing board and iron
Putting together the quilts: 11 blocks per row and 13 rows -- very simple and very quick.
I missed the July meeting so there will be a report on Epworth quits and other items in the September newsletter. ---Mary Cross

June 2010 Newsletter

From the President:
Dear Quilters,
Hope everyone is doing well and finding time to quilt in the middle of all of our summer activities. I personally have been very busy the last week trying to get ahead of schedule as one of my college friends is coming in just under two weeks to stay for a week while Todd is out of town. We always have the best time together and I am looking forward to a week of fun filled with zany, crazy, antics. I followed her instructions and planted plenty of mint this year so she can make mint juleps. I had never had one until last summer. They are her specialty!
Our guild is so lucky to be able to have the Heart Quilt exhibit next month. Please bring your friends along to enjoy an evening of fun to see this wonderful exhibit, have ice cream and enjoy good friends.
I picked my first tomatoes from the vine yesterday morning. They are big and fat and juicy! We have been getting cherry tomatoes for awhile now. Hopefully the wait for eggplant, squash, celery, cucumbers, beans, peppers, and cabbage won't be much longer. There are two banana peppers that are almost ready. Things always taste best fresh from the garden don't they? We split our garden this year between front and back yard and it is so fun to see the difference between front and back. Of course you can't forget the herbs either. It is wonderful to go outside with a pair of scissors just before cooking dinner.
So until next time keep quilting away. See you all in July if not before!!!!!
 ---Lynn

Programs

We will be back downstairs in July for another Prom Party from 6 to 7 and our annual Ice Cream Social, with thanks to Donna (for new dresses, bring your scissors) and Debbie for the ice-cream, etc. And more thanks to Lynn Buske who is managing the program while I am away (this gives her practice for next year). She has arranged for us to host an exhibition of the Heart Quilts. We will enjoy learning the stories behind the quilts and get ideas for our own quilts. We will be able to see how they were constructed and ask questions about ideas we don't understand. ---Helen

Minutes for June 7, 2010 Meeting

Meeting called to order by Lynn Lucas.
There were no human guests to introduce, however, Jodi Spillane introduced her 2 hedgehogs.
Minutes from the May 3, 2010 meeting approved.
Old Business: Opportunity quilt. Lynn Lucas opened a discussion of the opportunity quilt. At a Devine Board meeting earlier in the evening, the Board concluded that, because raffles are not legal in South Carolina, we could not raffle the opportunity quilt. Based on Lynn’s phone conversation with Ned Badgett, Assistant Director of Public Charities, our guild could lose our non-profit status. A motion was made and approved by the guild that a live auction be held at the September general meeting to sell the unfinished quilt, “as is”, to the highest bidder. The bids would start at $100.00 plus the cost of the materials. {see further details in article below}.
The July and Sept. meetings will be held on the 2nd Mondays due to holidays.
June birthdays are Joyce Greer, Mary Cross, Libby Law, and Elly Hansen.
Mary Cross, Love Goddess, announced that August meeting will be dedicated to making charity quilts. Bring sewing machines and irons. We will make the megaphone design using the Accuquilter cutter. Bring 8” X 8” inch squares if you can. A few people will start cutting the megaphones at the Design group this Thursday at Quilted Pearl.
Libby Law, Treasurer, announced our bank balance at $3,350.00.
Helen Brown announced that the program for next month includes the Heart Quilts, an extension of the Prom Party, and an ice cream social.
Teresa Coolidge gave a demonstration of a batik quilt made from 10’ squares. Deborah Hotchkiss gave a demonstration of using the computer and websites to obtain ideas. Elizabeth Kelbaugh gave a demonstration of using EQ on the computer to design quilts.
The quilt guild’s blog is devinequilters.blogspot.com.
Meeting was adjourned at 8:45pm. ---Teresa

Love Goddess (Charity Quilts Program) Report

The quilts for Epworth are almost complete. We have four finished and a fifth will be ready at the July meeting. It was suggested to me after the meeting, that as there is another (sixth) quilt almost finished, that we give it to the recent social work graduate. Please let me know your feelings on this matter. (mcross1919@aol.com )
Thank you all for the other love quilts. I will stitch labels on them and take to their respective homes.
As the summer is here, let's bring those popsicle treats that can be frozen for the Children's Garden.
---Mary

Opportunity Quilt Update, cont’d.

Format details of the auction will be promulgated later. The beginning bid will be the cost of the fabric/expenses plus $100. Known expenses so far (assuming all invoices are in) are close to $200, but if there are any outstanding invoices (get them in ladies!), it might be closer to $300. This amount should be settled by the next meeting.
The quilt was designed to finish 89" by 97". The center panel has been appliquéd, the log cabin border blocks have been pieced, the vine and vine blocks have been pieced but the leaves have not been appliquéd. The mountain blocks have been pieced and the four corners have had the leaves appliquéd to them.
There is probably enough extra fabric for binding and piecing some of the backing. (A picture of the finished design is on the last page of this newsletter).

Your name will then be added to the list of participants in the challenge. Your finished quilt must be at the 11/1/10 meeting. Theme: any take on the world of insects. You may use a traditional insect pattern, make a quilt with delightful insects or show a world that insects would surely inhabit.
